The 2002 Quilting Bee:
Labrador Heroes
In planning the 2002 Quilting Project, LABMED wished to salute all of our Labrador
heroes with a red, white and blue quilt. Throughout history, in times of stress,
people have turned to quilting. In today's stressful times, we thought -- why
not continue the tradition and salute the heroes among us?
We all have heard the stories of the canine heroes of 9/11. The
service dogs that guided their masters to safety and the dogs that
searched endlessly, initially for survivors, then had the sad task
of recovery. There also are the 'unsung' heroes, the dogs with whom
we share our lives. The ones that offer comfort to 'the rest of us'
everyday.
As poignant as the individual quilt block tributes are, another story makes
this quilt all the more special. The winner of our 2002 quilt project was a
wonderful woman named Gretchen Pinkel. Gretchen, a very skilled quilter and Lab
lover, helped sew many of the blocks and hand-letter many of the tributes you
will find pictured below. On the day she won this quilt, her beloved 2 1/2 year
old Lab Morgan died very unexpectedly from an accidental toxic mushroom
poisoning. Now Gretchen and her family have a quilt in remembrance of their own special Lab hero.

2002 Quilt Project Tributes
