The Quilting Bee

Passing the Key

Artist: Susan Martin
Technique: Machine applique and embroidery
Artist's comments: My quilt square was made in honor of our 2 rescued labs, Shadow and Barney. In 1985 we 'rescued' Shadow at 8 weeks old while on a weekend visit to the Colorado River at Parker, Arizona. The next day he was scheduled for the pound. Shadow died unexpectedly last November, leaving us embarrassed to admit how much we missed him. He had always met us at the door when we came home, laid in the middle of the kitchen floor while we prepared meals, and was generally in the middle of everything. The house was too empty without him. While we were sure we would get another lab, we thought we would wait until I retired to get a puppy. Six weeks after Shadow died, we were at the local pound and I was looking for a black lab "just like Shadow". What we found instead was a 2-year-old chocolate lab with eyes that could melt granite. Barney came to live with us 4 days before Christmas and has only reinforced our belief that labs are the best dogs ever. The quilt square depicts Shadow turning over the key to our heart to Barney.
