Clementine, July 1998

ClementineClementine is only 5 years old, but she has not had an easy life. She was used to breed many, many litters and when she was surrendered to a local dog pound, her condition was deplorable. Clementine had poor muscle coordination and many scars around her face and front legs. Rescuers from the Homeward Bound Humane Society believe she was probably caged her entire life. Years of abuse and neglect had scarred Clementine emotionally as well, causing her to shake in fear of men, loud voices, and sudden movement.

The most urgent health concern for Clementine was chronic ear infections that had resisted repeated treatment with antibiotics. LABMED was asked to help fund surgery necessary to clear up the infections in Clementine's ears and relieve her constant pain. After the surgery, Clementine will be deaf in one ear, but her prognosis is otherwise excellent.

The best part of Clementine's story is her remarkable ability to bounce back from her life of abuse. She is already beginning to heal emotionally. After a short time in foster care, she has learned to play with other dogs and loves to get treats from people. Clearly her Lab spirit is shining through!
