Success StoriesMax10, November 2002It was raining heavily in Durham, NC, when Max's rescuer left her car door open while she dashed off to drop some letters in a mail box. When she returned to her car, she found a big yellow male Lab sitting in the front passenger seat! Not knowing what else to do, she took the friendly dog home with her and tried unsuccessfully to locate his owner. A visit to the vet revealed some serious medical problems. Max had a number of abscessed and infected teeth along with gingivitis and periodontal disease. He was in constant pain and found it difficult to eat. The abscessed teeth needed to be removed and the infections treated with antibiotics. Max also had an umbilical hernia that might need surgical repair, and some wounds on his body that were not healing well. Max's rescuer is a graduate divinity student who was unable to pay for all of Max's medical needs. Her mother provided funds for the routine care that Max needed, including vaccinations and a heartworm test and medication. LABMED was happy to be able to help pay for the dental care and antibiotics that Max needed. We were delighted to receive this update about Max: "He listens very well and is learning things quickly. Last time he wiggled out of his collar he came back to me in less than 5 minutes where he used to just run and not come back until I got the car running. He is sitting and lying down on hand command now and not just voice. He's getting a little more playful and putting on a little weight." Max's guardian angel must have been watching over him when he picked just the right car to jump into! |
