Success StoriesMonroe2, April 2003
In an amazing spirit of cooperation, Lab-lovers from across the country came together to give this handsome young yellow Lab a second chance in life! A member of Labs4Rescue, an organization based near Memphis, TN, posted an email message about a young Lab in need of rescue from a shelter in rural West Monroe, LA. With no local group able to rescue Monroe at the time, a member of Labs4Rescue who lives in Boston agreed to have the sweet-tempered Lab transported to Massachusetts where she would foster him and find him a new home. When Monroe was taken to a vet to be vaccinated and neutered, though, he tested positive for heartworms. The cost of heartworm treatment varies considerably in different areas of the country. A decision was made to move Monroe to Memphis where a local vet would provide heartworm treatment at a reasonable cost as a courtesy to Labs4Rescue. A foster home was found for Monroe in Memphis where he would stay until he had recovered from the heartworm treatment. Then he would continue his cross-country journey to Boston! Meanwhile, the Boston rescuer contacted LABMED for help in paying for the heartworm treatment, and we were happy to be able to participate in this heart-warming rescue effort. |
